Aurora police arrested a teenager after an alleged armed carjacking turned into a car chase and fatal crash. The teen now faces charges of second-degree murder, among others.

The 17-year-old boy was arrested by the Aurora Police Department early Monday morning on charges of second-degree murder, aggravated robbery and vehicular eluding causing death after a car chase off of East Colfax turned deadly.

A witness called Aurora Police around 7 p.m. Sunday to report that he had been carjacked by an armed man. The vehicle was quickly located speeding near Dallas Street and East 25th Avenue, according to a news release from the Aurora Police Department.

Officers attempted to perform a traffic stop, but the suspect vehicle continued.

“Given the violent nature of the offense, a pursuit was authorized,” the department said.

Three officer vehicles followed the suspect around four blocks until it hit a speed bump in the 1900 block of Dayton Street. The vehicle then lost control and crashed into “several” parked cars on the street.

One of the parked vehicles was occupied by a 24-year-old man. He died at the scene from injuries due to the crash, according to officers.

The suspect was arrested after the crash and taken to a local hospital for evaluation. He was released Monday morning and is being held at a juvenile detention facility in Adams County. Due to being a minor, his identification will not be released.

The victim will be identified by the Adams County Coroner’s Office following an autopsy and family notification.

The three officers involved in the pursuit were placed on administrative leave while the 17th Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team conducts an investigation into “the circumstances leading up to the crash, including accident reconstruction and whether law enforcement conduct complied with Colorado law,” the department said.

Official charges against the teenage suspect will be filed by the 17th Judicial District Attorney’s Office following the investigation.
