Quarterback Blake Stenstrom makes ‘surreal’ return to CU in preparation to make NFL
BOULDER — For the first time in four years, Blake Stenstrom returned this month to the football facilities at the University of Colorado.
“It’s kind of surreal,’’ he said.
After starring at Valor Christian High School, the quarterback signed to play with the Buffaloes for the 2018 season. He redshirted as a freshman and then appeared in three games in 2019, completing 1 of 3 passes.
Stenstrom then moved on, transferring to Princeton and playing three seasons, including the past two spent as a top-notch Ivy League quarterback. But Stenstrom last week returned for some workouts at the CU Indoor Practice Facility and on Tuesday took part in the school’s pro day.
“After about 15 minutes back in the facility, it felt like home again,’’ he said.
Stenstrom is trying to make the NFL just like his father did. Steve Stenstrom was an NFL quarterback with Kansas City, Chicago, San Francisco, Detroit and the Broncos from 1995-2001, starting 10 games. He didn’t get into any games for Denver.
Blake Stenstrom threw for 2,243 yards and 13 touchdowns for the Tigers in 2023. That followed a 2023 season in which he threw for 2,742 yards and 15 touchdowns and was named second-team All-Ivy League.
The 6-foot-4, 220-pound Stenstrom is not expected to be selected in the April 25-27 NFL draft but could be looked at as a free agent. He’s been training hard in Southern California to prepare for a pro opportunity.
“My mentality is go give this thing my all and see what happens,’’ he said. “I can’t control all the opportunities, but I can control my effort and it’s gone really well so far.”
Stenstrom was eligible to take part in Colorado’s pro day due to being from the Denver area. He said his father is providing valuable advice in his quest to follow him in the pro ranks.
“He’s been great (with) his experience in going through it,” Stenstrom said.
Stenstrom also has been getting advice from former Princeton teammates Andrei Iosivas, a wide receiver who was taken in the sixth round of the 2023 draft by Cincinnati, and guard Henry Byrd, who was with the Broncos in training camp last summer. Byrd is now on Minnesota’s roster after spending time last season on its practice squad.
Although Stenstrom finished his college career at Princeton, he still has a soft spot for the Buffaloes. He made note of how different the program is now under head coach Deion Sander than when he played.
“It’s been really cool to see,’’ Stenstrom said. “I consider myself a Buff. My wife (Hannah) graduated from there. It’s been awesome to see the energy around the program. I tune in and watch the Buffaloes games every chance I get.”
