Denver City and County offices closed Monday for César Chávez Day

City and County Building at night

All City and County of Denver offices will be closed Monday for César Chávez Day, a city holiday.

Chávez led a varied life, serving in the United States Navy for two years, as well as cofounding the National Farm Workers Association, which later evolved into the United Farm Workers labor union. In 1994, Chávez was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian award in the United States.

Colorado is one of several states that adopted César Chávez Day as an optional holiday.

Due to the holiday, the mayor’s office, clerk and recorder’s office, auditor’s office and most city agencies will be closed, according to a Friday news release.

Other city services, such as Denver Health, will remain open. City services that are open 24 hours, like Denver International Airport, will also remain open.

Police, sheriff and fire departments will work as usual during the holiday, as will other emergency responders.

The city’s information line for non-emergency services, 311, will also be closed due to the holiday. Service requests can still be made online at denver.gov.org and selecting “report and issue.”

Here’s a list of major closures:

• The Denver Animal Shelter (night drop kennels will be open)

• Auditor’s Office

• City Council offices

• Clerk and Recorder’s Office

• Denver County Court

• Denver Motor Vehicle offices

• Housing Stability Offices

• All Denver Public Libraries

• Office of the Medical Examiner

• All Recreation Centers

• Trash, Recycling and Compost collection

For a full list of closures, residents can check the city’s website for specific departments.

Programming will continue on Denver8 Television, the city’s municipal T.V. station.
