Denver street sweeping operations begin, parking violations will result in citations

Street Sweeping to begin in Denver

No, this isn’t an April Fools’ Day joke, the city will begin street sweeping operations on Tuesday.

Denver’s Department of Transportation and Infrastructure (DOTI) reminded residents to check the red and white signs on their block as a refresher on parking restrictions. Failure to move one’s car on a street sweeping day will result in a $50 citation.

The start of street sweeping may seem like a nuisance — especially if one forgets to move their vehicle — but it is a critical aspect of keeping the city clean, according to DOTI.  Street sweeping clears the road of dirt, grime and debris that may otherwise find its way into the city water supply and the air we breathe.

Another benefit is street sweeping helps keep storm drains clear of debris, preventing flooding during Denver’s monsoon seasons.

Fun Fact: Last year, street sweepers hit more than 100,000 miles of road and collected enough debris to fill 15 Olympic-sized swimming pools. This also translates to filling a football field with more than 23 feet of dirt, according to DOTI.

Street sweeping operations will begin Tuesday, April 2 and conclude in November. More information can be found on the city’s website where residents may also sign up for text or email reminders.
