A surging windstorm striking the Denver region has caused turbulence for local fliers.
Saturday’s windstorm, expected to bring gusts as high as 60-70 mph in Denver and as high as 100 mph in the foothills west of Denver, has caused various delays and cancellations for flights out of Denver International Airport.
As of 4 p.m., 229 incoming and outgoing flights have been delayed at the airport. 16 incoming and outgoing flights have been cancelled, according to FlightAware.
Bruno Rodriguez, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Boulder, told The Denver Gazette that winds will ramp up throughout the day with the peak gusts between about 10 p.m. Saturday through sunrise Sunday morning.
During the peak of the event, Rodriguez said Denver should expect sustained winds of 30 to 45 mph, with areas west of I-25 experiencing the worst winds.
Those flying in or out of DIA on Saturday and Sunday should check Flydenver.com for specific flight delays and cancellations.
Those staying in Denver may experience some power and internet outages due to the storm, as well.
As of 4 p.m. the Denver metro is experiencing 136 reported power outages, according to Xcel Energy. The outages are affecting an estimated 52,189 customers in the region.
