A 12-year-old boy in Clear Creek County died Saturday night after being trapped inside a truck that flipped over into a river off of Interstate 70.
The Clear Creek County Sheriff’s Office responded to a crash on the 232 off-ramp of I-70 around 9 p.m., the sheriff’s office said in a news release.
The ramp is located near Empire Junction.
Officers arrived to a truck submerged in the Clear Creek river with a number of people outside the vehicle needing help, officials said.
Officers were approached by two woman with facial lacerations and a man “running up the embankment screaming for help,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement.
Authorities said they discovered a fourth victim, a 12-year-old boy, who was trapped within the sinking truck.
Deputies from Idaho Springs and Georgetown police departments, plus a “courageous citizen,” jumped into the water to attempt to get the boy out of the truck, officials said.
The boy was “trapped between a boulder and a vehicle,” they said, adding officers were able to extract the boy out of the water.
Despite resuscitation attempts, the boy was pronounced dead upon arriving at a local hospital, the sheriff’s office said.
Further details of the crash are unavailable, the sheriff’s office said.
It added: “The Clear Creek County Sheriff’s Office offers our deepest condolences to the grieving family during this difficult time.”
