Denver police believe a sexual assault suspect arrested in March may have other victims after investigators allege he lured and raped a woman inside one of Denver’s six shelters serving illegal immigrants.
The Denver Police Department investigators are asking for the public’s help to determine whether Tyler Jordan Ried, 32, assaulted other victims after an unnamed woman accused him of sexual assault earlier this year.
The reported sexual assault incident occurred on Jan. 2, according to an arrest affidavit obtained by The Denver Gazette.
The affidavit revealed the sexual assault happened inside a room at one of Denver’s hotel-turned-immigrant shelters.
Police asked The Denver Gazette to not disclose the exact location “due to investigative purposes,” a DPD spokesperson said.
On Jan. 2, Ried allegedly lured a woman into the shelter by making her believe he had children, according to the affidavit.
The disturbing details of the alleged crime are spelled out in that court document:
After buying a soda at a nearby convenient store at 11:30 p.m., the woman was greeted by Ried, who asked her if she has kids. After replying “yes,” Ried told the woman he also had children and could help her by giving her things for her kids back at the shelter, adding that the woman followed Ried back into the shelter.
When Ried opened his room door, the woman saw kid’s toys inside, then went inside “under the impression that he would help her out with her children.”
Once inside, Ried allegedly pulled out a handgun and told the woman to take off her clothes. After she refused, Ried allegedly pushed her onto the bed, forced her clothes off, placed his clothes and gun on the table, then proceeded to allegedly rape her, according to the affidavit.
After the assault, the woman ran out of the room and Ried fled the scene.
Witness testimony, surveillance footage and the victim identifying the suspect through a photo lineup led police to arrest Ried, according to the affidavit.
Police arrested Ried on March 7, according to a DPD news release on Monday.
Since then, the Denver District Attorney’s Office charged Ried with two felony counts: sexual Assault – no Consent and felony menacing. He is also being charged with five misdemeanor counts: four counts of indecent exposure and one count of unlawful sexual contact.
Police are now searching for any other possible victims.
“There may be victims or witnesses who are reluctant to report information for various reasons, to include immigration status,” police said in the news release. “The Denver Police Department shares that it does not check immigration status and there are options for witnesses to remain anonymous when reporting.”
