Rockies’ struggles continue as Marlins send them to bottom of NL standings

Rockies Marlins Baseball

The Rockies have become a get-right win for clubs throughout the majors, but Miami was supposed to be the exception.

The Marlins entered their three-game series against Colorado with the National League’s fewest wins. After a 4-1 win on Wednesday, they sent the Rockies to the cellar instead.

Back-to-back days have seen them get a winning performance from a starting pitcher, but a five-run first inning to start the series has turned to seven hits in the last 18 frames for the visiting Rockies.

Colorado has faced a deficit in all 30 of its games to start 2024. That’s the modern-era record, and beat out the 1910 St. Louis Browns. It’s the second time in franchise history that it’s happened, though the Rockies’ 1998 streak didn’t start on opening day.

Each consistency in the club’s portfolio is a losing one.

Their offense isn’t drawing walks. They were overmatched against some of the league’s top arms like Aaron Nola and Dylan Cease. Wednesday’s starter was Roddery Muñoz, a righty who carried an 8.62 earned run average in four appearances (three starts) in Triple-A this year.

He went six innings and struck out seven Rockies. At one point, he retired 11 consecutive hitters.

“The cutter and the breaking ball were legit,” manager Bud Black said. “He’s got a good arm.”

Colorado has drawn walks at the fourth-lowest rate in the majors. The league’s third-highest strikeout percentage compounds the issue.

Another common thread through Wednesday’s loss was failing to find a third out.

In a two-run fifth inning, the Marlins scored both with two outs. They put the visitors away for good with two more in the eighth inning.

The walks the Rockies’ offense isn’t drawing are being dished out by their pitching staff. Nick Mears was the victim of two earned runs, thanks to two free passes. Dakota Hudson went four innings without allowing trouble. He hit Emmanuel Rivera with a pitch to start the fifth, and Miami capitalized with two runs.

Ryan Feltner cruised Tuesday, too, but allowed a leadoff hit in the ninth inning. He hit a batter and allowed a double before his would-be complete-game shutout turned to three runs allowed. Justin Lawrence issued a four-pitch walk and hit another batter to further aid the five-run comeback.

The two factors consistently hurt their chances to win, even against a team that has faced equal hurdles.

“It’s our lack of scoring runs and a little bit of erratic pitching,” Black said. “It’s baptism under fire — they’re learning. They’re learning it’s hard in the big leagues.”

The Rockies haven’t won back-to-back games in 2024. It’s the catalyst for their franchise-worst 10 consecutive series without a win to start the season. A split in a four-game series with the Padres required their biggest comeback of the year.

Miami ended its own streak without consecutive wins to start the year against Colorado on Wednesday. It also sent the Rockies to its spot in the cellar, and they haven’t found a foothold to climb out yet.

Marlins 4, Rockies 1

What happened: The Marlins scored each of their four runs with two outs to upend a Rockies’ offense that has just seven hits in their last 18 innings.

On the mound: Dakota Hudson cruised through most of his 5⅔ innings but hit traffic in the fifth. He allowed two runs with two outs to end his day. Nick Mears also struggled and allowed a pair of two-out earned runs on two hits and two walks.

At the plate: Ryan McMahon upped his average to .324 with the club’s only extra-base hit. His double led to Elias Díaz’s run-scoring groundout but was part of just four Colorado hits. It struck out eight times and went 0 for 4 with runners in scoring position.

What’s next: Colorado Rockies (RHP Peter Lambert, 2-1) at Miami Marlins (RHP Edward Cabrera, 1-1) at 10:10 a.m. on Thursday at loanDepot Park (Rockies.TV).
