Aurora police shot and killed a man on Saturday who allegedly shot another man in the leg and brandished a handgun at officers.
Two Aurora police officers shot 28-year-old Jose Luis Rodriguez-Balderrama in the 1400 block of Clinton Street on Saturday evening.
The Arapahoe County Coroner released the man’s identity Tuesday and reported the autopsy showed he died of multiple gunshot wounds.
The officers were at the scene investigating a reported shooting and speaking to a victim when Rodriguez-Balderrama returned, allegedly holding a handgun, according to a Tuesday news release from the Aurora Police Department.
The two officers responded to the apartment complex in northwest Aurora around 8 p.m. Saturday. Multiple people reported gunshots and that a man had been shot in the leg. A red Mustang had reportedly fled from the scene.
Other officers found and pursued the vehicle briefly before losing sight of it, the department said.
Investigators spoke with the victim, a 29-year-old Aurora man, who claimed that his acquaintance, Rodriguez-Balderrama, arrived at his apartment and brandished a handgun. The victim attempted to flee the apartment but was shot in the leg.
The motive for the shooting is still unknown, the department said.
While the two officers were speaking with the victim, Rodriguez-Balderrama returned to the scene with a 40-caliber handgun.
The officers demanded that the suspect show them his hands and later fired multiple rounds at him, causing his death.
The two officers were not injured and were placed on administrative leave — per agency policy — as the department and the 18th Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team complete further investigations.
Interim Aurora Police Chief Heather Morris noted during a weekend press conference that it is still unclear whether the suspect aimed or fired his weapon at the officers before they opened fire.
