Two Aurora police officers on leave following officer-involved shooting and vehicle pursuit on Saturday night

Police Line Do Not Cross

Editor’s note: The Arapahoe County Coroner’s Office Tuesday identified the person shot and killed as 28-year-old Jose Rodriguez-Balderrama. He sustained multiple gunshot wounds, classifying his death as a homicide.

Two Aurora police officers have been placed on administrative leave following a brief car chase and officer involved shooting on Saturday night.

The shooting was reported at the 1400 block of Clinton Street, a few blocks north of Lowry Park.

Upon arriving at the scene, one victim was discovered with a gunshot wound in his leg and was taken to a nearby hospital, according to police.

Officers identified a suspect driving a red mustang, who sped away and prompted a pursuit, according to Aurora Police.

At one point, the suspect returned to the scene of the original shooting, according to police.

Interim Aurora Police Chief Heather Morris stated in a press conference Saturday night that the events following the suspect’s return to the scene remain unclear at this stage of the investigation.

Morris mentioned that at one point, two officers discharged their weapons at the suspect. The unidentified man received medical attention at the scene before being transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Morris added that it is still uncertain whether the suspect aimed or fired his weapon at the officers before they opened fire. Neither of the officers involved were injured.

The officers have both been placed on administrative leave as per standard department policy, according to the Aurora Police Department.

The Aurora Police Department has launched both criminal and internal investigations, and the shooting will also be investigated by the Critical Incident Response Team led by the 18th Judicial District.

As of Sunday, identifying details regarding both the victim and suspect were not released.
