Rockies’ Montero fuels win streak, drives in three runs in 5-4 victory over Padres

Elehuris Montero played fire extinguisher on Monday for the Rockies.
He came through with multiple hits to drive in a team-high three runs in their 5-4 win over the Padres at Petco Park. It helped them overcome a pitching staff that struggled with walks.
It also clinched a five-game win streak for Colorado after it had gone until last weekend without winning back-to-back games in 2024. The last time the franchise had a win streak of more than five was in 2019 when it won eight straight.
Rockies 5, Padres 4
What happened: Colorado used two-out hitting and a two-hit night from Elehuris Montero to hold off the Padres despite its pitching staff’s struggle to find the strike zone.
On the mound: The long ball hurt Colorado pitching on Monday but the free pass didn’t. Dakota Hudson allowed a pair of home runs in his three earned runs allowed. Jake Bird allowed another to make up his one earned run allowed. Justin Lawrence was one of four Rockies’ pitchers to issue multiple walks as part of the staff’s 11. Jalen Beeks worked around three to load the bases in a scoreless ninth to nail down his fourth save. Each of San Diego’s last eight baserunners reached by walk.
At the plate: Elehuris Montero led the way and drove in three runs with his two hits. He and Ezequiel Tovar both doubled and had two hits. The Rockies had five other batters get a hit to contribute to their nine. They scored three of their five runs with two outs but didn’t take advantage of three Padres’ errors.
What’s next: Colorado Rockies (RHP Cal Quantrill, 2-3) at San Diego Padres (RHP Dylan Cease, 5-2) at 7:40 p.m. on Tuesday at Petco Park (Rockies.TV).
