Donkeys set to roam the streets at 9,494 feet of elevation in Colorado mountain town
Looking to see a true ‘Colorado’ spectacle? Head to Cripple Creek at 9,494 feet of elevation on Memorial Day weekend for the annual release of their herd of donkeys.
The group that takes care of the donkeys – dubbed the Two Mile High Club – will be releasing the donkeys from their winter pastures on May 27, setting the donkeys free to roam city lawns and gardens as they please. From that point on, the donkeys will be spotted wandering around the high-elevation mountain town about 45 minutes west of Colorado Springs until October.
The official release is set to take place at C Street and Thurlow, starting at 11 a.m.
The perfect way to enjoy the day will be to plan for a picnic at City Park, located at 128 East Bennett Avenue, where a gathering will take place right after the release. There will be a quartet, as well as a performance by members of the Woodland Park Wind Symphony Mountain Brass Band.
The next big donkey-related event in Cripple Creek will be the 93rd annual Donkey Derby Days set to take place from June 28 through June 30.
