‘Twisted’ landspout tornado spotted on Colorado plains
A landspout tornado was spotted in the southern portion of Colorado’s Washington County on Sunday.
According to an X post by the National Weather Service (NWS) in Boulder, the landspout tornado occurred near Lindon, southeast of Last Chance. The NWS reminded people to move indoors to the lowest floor of the home during hazardous weather of that nature.
According to the NOAA National Severe Storms Laboratory, a landspout is a tornado with a “narrow, rope-like condensation funnel that forms while the thunderstorm cloud is still growing and there is no rotating updraft.” The spinning motion originates near the ground. Generally, this type of tornado does not cause damage.
The NWS also reported a tornado on the ground southeast of Fleming on Sunday, moving east-southeast. There was also golf ball size hail with the storm.
