Rockies’ Kris Bryant rehabbed and returning for Athletics series

The Rockies rehabbed reinforcements are ready, and nearly ready, to help.
Kris Bryant was added to the active roster off the injured list ahead of Tuesday’s series opener in Oakland. He beat Nolan Jones back, but the latter has always been “a few days behind” in the rehab process. There was some thought that each would return Tuesday.
The two have been out with back injuries. Jones left the lineup April 29 with a lower-back strain and Bryant on April 14 after crashing into the wall to make an acrobatic catch in Toronto the day prior.
Colorado sent Sean Bouchard back to Triple-A Albuquerque to make room. He was recalled to help fill Bryant’s absence and hit .222 in 54 at-bats. Another move will be needed when Jones returns.
The most recent issues cast doubt on Bryant’s future health, even with his return to the lineup.
Bryant said the disks in his back are “pretty much dried up” and will require maintenance for the rest of his career. The facet joints in his spine are also arthritic.
The Rockies moved Bryant to first base last year to avoid injuries before a rare start in right field led to his absence.
Bryant had four of his seven hits this season in his last five games as part of a .149 average in 47 at-bats. He had three hits, including a double, in 20 at-bats with the Isotopes.
It’s another shakeup for a lineup that has found recent success.
Since May 9 — the start of a recently ended seven-game win streak — the Rockies are second in the majors with a .283 average. They have the fourth-most hits (100) in that span and are tied with the fourth-best slugging percentage (.439).
Bryant has been a letdown in his Rockies’ tenure. He signed a seven-year, $182 million deal with the club before the 2022 season and has missed significant time with various ailments since. In three seasons, he has played 135 of a possible 370 games and hit .249 with Colorado.
