The University of Denver’s Campus Safety department received a phone call Sunday reporting a shooting nearby. While police and security teams responded to the reported incident, someone vandalized another campus building.
One of DU’s academic buildings, the Ritchie School of Engineering and Computer Science, was vandalized with red paint and white spray paint on Sunday evening, according to a news release from the school. The incident occurred after the false shooting report from a blue light phone.
“This false emergency call caused Campus Safety and Denver Police to respond to another location and tie up valuable resources unnecessarily, creating a potentially dangerous situation for anyone with a real emergency,” the school said. “Making a false report could result in criminal charges.”
The spray paint, splattered over the brick walkway, read expletives like, “f— Lockheed Martin.” The red paint seemed thrown at the building’s door and windows.
Lockheed Martin — an aerospace and defense manufacturer with a large campus in Waterton Canyon southwest of Denver — does have partnership programming with the school.
The graffiti was cleaned up by Monday.
The school noted that they are unsure whether the vandalism has any ties to the pro-Palestinian protests occurring on the campus since May 9.
“These actions run counter to DU’s core values, and we have no tolerance for such behavior. We are actively pursuing leads to identify those responsible,” the school said.
