Airbnb cracks down on Colorado house parties ahead of holiday weekend

'No more parties': Mountain town Airbnb-goers should know about this policy update (copy)

With summer holidays rapidly approaching, Airbnb is quelling “disruptive” gatherings across the country with its ongoing anti-party system.

The short-term rental service will continue to use “machine learning technology” to block renters from hosting parties at Airbnb homes during Memorial Day weekend and Fourth of July weekend, according to a news release from the company.

The system — which was initially implemented last summer — looks at a variety of factors when a customer attempts to rent a home, including the type of listing being booked, the duration of the stay, the distance to the listing from the guest’s location and whether the booking is last minute, among other signs, the company said.

“The overwhelming majority of guests and hosts on Airbnb are respectful neighbors and travelers, and disruptive parties are rare,” Airbnb’s Global Head of Operations Tara Bunch said in the release. “Our aim is to reduce the risk even more, and we’re optimistic these efforts will have a positive impact for hosts and local communities.”

Approximately 67,500 people across the country were blocked from booking over the Memorial Day and Fourth of July weekends in 2023. Approximately 850 people were deterred from booking an entire home listing over the same weekends in Colorado last year.

While the company says “disruptive” parties are rare — noting just 0.035% of reservations globally resulted in a party report in 2023 — Colorado has seen disruptive parties end in tragedy.

In March, 2023, 18-year-old Rigoberto Esparza was shot and killed during a rented house party near 84th Avenue and Washington Street in Adams County.

The home, labeled the House of Vibes, was booked through a rental app, like Airbnb. It’s listing was removed from Airbnb shortly after the incident.

“We have some experience with these types of properties being rented out and utilized for larger events, parties, for various occasions,” Sgt. Adam Sherman, the Adams County Sheriff’s Office’s public information officer, told The Denver Gazette’s news partner, 9News, following the shooting in 2023.

“Those messages get spread through social media, and as soon as that happens you never know who will show up,” he said. “It could be gang affiliation, or other types of opportunities to where maybe the person hosting wasn’t expecting.”

The metro Denver area has seen a bevy of other party shootings in the year since.

Three men in their early 20s were shot and killed at a Halloween party at an industrial complex at 12445 E. 39th Avenue on Oct. 14, 2023. Three other people were shot and injured.

A 16-year-old boy was arrested in connection to the shooting and killing of a 19-year-old man at a party in Aurora on March 23, 2024.

The “large” party, according to the Aurora Police Department, occurred at a rented facility.

One person was killed and two others injured in a house-party shooting the same evening, March 23, in Commerce City.

The shooting occurred among a large gathering of people at a house in the 2900 Block of E. 69th Place, according to the Commerce City Police Department.

All of the shootings occurred at parties, though the status of whether they were rented through companies like Airbnb was never disclosed in most incidents.
