‘Down Under:’ Denver Zoo opens new habitat Friday

Colorado First Gentleman Marlon Reis will attend a ribbon-cutting ceremony as Denver Zoo's new habitat opens Friday.

The newest habitat at Denver Zoo opened Friday.

The new “Down Under” habitat features species native to Australia and its surrounding areas, including red-necked wallabies, tree kangaroos and bright-blue cassowaries.

Formerly the site of Denver Zoo’s Bird World and part of the historic pachyderm habitat, Down Under makes up more than two acres of the zoo’s 80-acre campus.

The multi-species area has a first-of-its-kind immersive pathway experience with water-wise landscaping that echoes the animals’ native ranges and original artwork telling the story of First Nations peoples.

Huon tree kangaroos Pearl and Tristan, who arrived in 2023 and are a new species at Denver Zoo, will live in the area.

Denver Zoo said it received more than $1.5 million in community support for the construction of Down Under as part of its “Into the Great Wild Open” campaign.
