Southwest flight to Florida makes emergency landing in Colorado Springs Monday night

A Southwest Airlines flight from Denver to Tampa was diverted to the Colorado Springs Airport Monday evening due to what officials are calling mechanical issues on the plane, according to the Colorado Springs Airport.

Southwest flight 1070 from Denver International Airport departed the airport north of Colorado Springs just after 7 p.m. Monday. The plane flew a little over 90 miles before making an emergency landing at the Colorado Springs Airport.

According to Southwest spokesperson Lynn Lunsford, the flight to Tampa was diverted to Colorado Springs after flight attendants reported smelling a smoke-like odor in the cabin.

“The flight crew followed established procedures, landed the aircraft and safely deplaned customers and crew,” Lunsford said.

No updates are available regarding the possible source of the odor reported from the plane’s cabin.

Colorado Springs Airport spokeswoman Dana Schield said the plane landed at the airport Monday evening causing the closure of one runway. All passengers flying were deplaned and bussed to the nearby terminal.

Schield had no other information about the emergency landing, but confirmed with The Gazette Tuesday morning that Southwest sent a second plane for passengers traveling to Tampa.
