Pull up, sit back and relax: A list of drive-ins around Colorado
Summer is here — and what better way to enjoy the warm weather than with a movie!
With seven drive-ins around the state opening for the 2024 season, there are plenty of stops to catch a film.
This year, theaters are looking forward to lots of family-friendly movies, including features such as “IF,” “The Garfield Movie” and “Inside Out 2.”
“We’re finally getting some family movies, which we’re excited about,” said Marcella Snyder, the owner and operator of the Mesa Drive-In in Pueblo. “For families, it’s a nice inexpensive option for people with kids. We are significantly cheaper on our ticket prices for kids than most indoor theaters, and it kind of gives them space to be kids. Sometimes it’s difficult to have young kids inside of a movie theater without feeling like you’re being disruptive, but when you’re in your own car, it gives you the ability to kind of let your kids be kids.”
Here’s where you can pull up to watch some movies around the state:
88 Drive-In Theatre, Commerce City
The 88 Drive-In Theatre is Denver’s last surviving original drive-in. The theater, which opened in 1972 and has been family-owned since 1976, is now open for the 2024 season.
The drive-in uses a digital projector and has 35mm film capabilities. Sound is broadcast via FM radio, and snacks are served up at the location’s historic snack bar. Each showing features two movies, which are both included with the price of admission. Dogs are allowed at the drive-in, on leash.
The theater is at 8780 Rosemary St. in Commerce City, and tickets are available at the box office, which opens at 7 p.m. Thursday-Sunday. Tickets are $10 per person; children under 12 are free. Tickets are not sold in advance, only for that evening’s presentation. For more information, go to 88drivein.net or by call 303-287-7717.
Mesa Drive-In, Pueblo
Officially open for this year’s season, Pueblo’s Mesa Drive-In is family owned and operated. The theater opened in 1951, and is complete with concessions and two movie screens with showings on Friday and Saturday.
The theater shows movies rain or shine — unless the weather becomes dangerous or they lose power. Dogs are welcome at the drive-in, on leash.
“It’s one of the few drive-ins left in the United States, and not only is it one of the remaining drive-ins, it’s one of the original drive-ins,” Snyder said. Snyder purchased the drive-in about three years ago from previous owners, who had operated the theater for 25 years.
“It’s got a beautiful marquee and it has a lovely community and it’s really nostalgic to walk into the concession stands; the snack bar, it’s from 1951 and you can tell because it’s got a wrap-around counter with the little candy displays and everything, and so it’s really just a big beautiful dose of nostalgia,” Snyder said.
The Mesa Drive-In, 2625 Santa Fe Drive, Pueblo, opens its box office at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $11, and $3 for kids aged 4-12 years old. More information: mesadrive-in.com or 719-542-3345.
Comanche Drive-In, Buena Vista
Known as one of the highest drive-ins in the U.S., the Comanche Drive-In shows movies at an elevation of 8,000 feet. The theater, about 3 miles outside Buena Vista, was built in 1966 by John and Pearl Groy and has remained in family hands since.
The theater’s digital projector offers 4K clarity and uses FM radio for sound. The drive-in has nightly showings Friday-Tuesdays for the summer, opening Memorial Day weekend.
Tickets for the drive-in, at 27784 County Road 339, Buena Vista, start at $12 for adults and $6 for kids 6-12 years old (kids 5 and under are free). comanchedrivein.com, 719-395-2766.
Holiday Twin Drive-in, Fort Collins For more than 50 years, the Holiday Twin Drive-In has been playing hits.
With two movie screens, the drive-in offers two double features each evening in the summer. The theater was built in the late 1960s, and has been family-operated since the late Wesley Webb purchased the drive-in in 1979.
The Holiday Twin Drive-In, 2206 S. Overland Trail, Fort Collins, opens at 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and at 7 p.m. Sunday-Thursday. Tickets for those 10 and older are $9, and $6 for ages 6-9. holidaytwin.com, 970-221-1244.
Star Drive-In, Montrose
The Star Drive-In is now open for the summer, celebrating 75 years of family ownership.
The original drive-in theater, which opened in 1950, hosts double features and is open for the weekends.
The ticket office at the drive-in, 600 E. Miami Road, Montrose, opens 45 minutes before dusk. Tickets are $9 for those 12 and older and free for children 11 and under. stardrivein.com, 970-249-6170.
Best Western Movie Manor, Monte Vista
The Best Western Movie Manor is a hotel attached to a historic drive-in movie theater.
With two screens, the drive-in offers movies for free to hotel guests, who can even watch the first screen from rooms. As for the second screen, those staying at the hotel must drive to the lot in order to watch the show, but at no extra cost. Nonhotel guests can also head to the drive-in with the cost of admission.
The theater opened as the Star Drive-In in 1955, but it wasn’t until 1964 that the drive-in’s owner added 14 hotel rooms. The drive-in is now open, through mid-September.
This drive-in is at 2830 U.S. 160 W., Monte Vista. bestwesternmoviemanor.com, 719-852-5921.
Tru Vu Drive-In, Delta County
The Tru Vu Drive-In in Delta County will be opening this season after some uncertainty.
The drive-in plans to start showing movies by May 31, kicking off the summer season. The theater was bought by longtime employee Jorge Rodriguez a few years ago, following the death of Jeanne Dewsnup, who owned the theater for more than 50 years.
Rodriguez is working on starting a GoFundMe this summer to help with theater expenses.
Tru Vu Drive-In is at 1001 Colorado 92, Delta. Tickets start at $9 for adults and $2 for kids 6 to 12 years old. truvudelta.com, 970-874-9556.
Blue Starlite Drive-in, Minturn
While the Blue Starlite Drive-In in Minturn won’t be returning this summer, it’s prepping to open in 2025.
