USWNT’s Korbin Albert booed in Colorado after past anti-LGBTQ+ posts

One soccer player for the U.S. Women’s National Team entered the field to a smattering of boos on Saturday afternoon in Colorado when she subbed in for local name Lindsay Horan during a friendly match against South Korea.

Korbin Albert, a 20-year-old midfielder from Grayslake, Ill., subbed in for Horan in the 71st minute of the USWNT’s 4-0 win over South Korea on Saturday while the crowd booed.

It’s common practice for crowds at USWNT games to cheer when a local player enters a match, or applaud a player when they exit, but Albert has been regularly booed by crowds while touring with the USWNT for old social media posts in which she is alleged to have mocked LGBTQ+ persons.

She has since publicly apologized for the posts.

“I want to sincerely apologize for my actions on social media,” Albert wrote on her Instagram story. “Liking and sharing posts that are offensive, insensitive and hurtful was immature and disrespectful which was never my intent.”

As reported by multiple outlets previously, her controversial social media history included a liked post aimed at former team captain Megan Rapinoe. In it, the original poster said: “God taking time off performing miracles to make sure Megan Rapinoe sprains her ankle in her final ever game.”

Rapinoe herself became a controversial figure when she began kneeling for the U.S. national anthem “in a little nod” to former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick.

Another post from Albert on her TikTok profile was posted on Fourth of July weekend of last year, showing family members stating that their “pronouns are U.S.A.,” with Korbin participating in the video. The post no longer appears on her profile.

The USWNT wore rainbow-themed jerseys for Pride month at Saturday’s match, including Albert.

Similar jerseys from prior friendlies during the team’s current tour were auctioned off by the team last week, with proceeds benefitting the You Can Play Project, an organization “dedicated to ensuring equality, respect and safety for all athletes, coaches and fans no matter their sexual orientation and/or gender identity.”
