Boulder’s annual 4th of July celebration canceled due to end of partnership with host

Ralphie's Independence Day Blast will not happen at Folsom Field, or anywhere else, this year.

After 24 years of Fourth of July celebrations at the University of Colorado Boulder’s Folsom Field, the field will be quiet this upcoming holiday after the partnership that supported the annual event ended.

In past years, Ralphie’s Independence Day Blast was put on through a public-private partnership between the city’s event planning committee and WK Real Estate, which has supported the event that lights the sky with fireworks or drones over Folsom Field, according to a news release Tuesday.

This year, the event will not happen, according to the release.

Boulder’s event planning committee is made up people from various organizations including the City of Boulder, Visit Boulder, Boulder Chamber and University of Colorado Boulder. The committee is in the process of looking at other options for future celebrations, according to the release.

In the meantime, a Boulder City Council declaration on Aug. 15 will thank WK Real Estate for their support over the years.

“WK Real Estate has demonstrated its love of Boulder, and this holiday, for nearly two and a half decades,” Boulder City Manager Nuria Rivera-Vandermyde said in the release. “We appreciate both the years of celebration made possible by WK Real Estate and the model of partnership they helped us forge.”

WK Real Estate’s president, Dan Kingdom, said the company considers it a privilege to have been part of the event each year.

“We have enjoyed being a part of this Boulder County tradition and will cherish the many great memories and relationships we have from our years of sponsoring the event,” Kingdom said.

Kingdom and event planning spokespeople did not immediately reply to the Denver Gazette’s inquiry about why the partnership ended this year.

While the annual event will not happen, many other holiday festivities will carry on around the Boulder area. They include the following:
