Aurora Reservoir hours limited; alcohol banned

An alcohol ban and new hours are coming to the Aurora Reservoir starting Saturday.

Aurora officials are changing how and when people can recreate at Aurora Reservoir, 5800 Powhaton Road, including updating hours and banning alcohol starting this weekend.

On Saturdays and Sundays, the reservoirs open hours will temporarily change to 5 a.m. to 6 p.m. starting on Saturday, June 8, according to a news release.

Visitors to the reservoir will also see extra security on the weekends to make sure people are recreating safely, officials said in the release.

Additionally, alcohol will be temporarily prohibited at the Reservoir, the release said, and preexisting rules about loud music will be “strictly enforced.”

Parks, Recreation and Open Space Director Brooke Bell said the changes are being made to make the reservoir experience better and help their staff better manage the large crowds who come to the reservoir in warmer months.

“Aurora Reservoir is a beautiful and unique space within the city, and one that we want all guests to be able to enjoy,” Bell said in the release.

Signs in English and Spanish are posted in the area to remind people of the changes, the release said.

Prescheduled, permitted and large-scale events will not be impacted by these changes.

Parks, Recreation and Open Space spokesperson Sara Van Holbeck said the changes come after a “careful analysis of park usage patterns,” but did not specifically clarify any instances or situations that led to the rule changes.

Removing alcohol from the area helps makes it more family-friendly, Van Holbeck said, and helps reduce “the risk of incidents that can disrupt the peaceful atmosphere of the park.”

More information about the reservoir’s rules and regulations can be found on it website.
