An Adams County jury convicted 29-year-old Omar Nieves of first-degree murder for the shooting death of Miguel Antonio Chavez-Eagle, 24, Adams County District Attorney Brian Mason announced.

Nieves will serve life in prison without the possibility of parole. He was arrested in 2023 following a shooting in Commerce City.

Police suspected Nieves had shot Chavez-Eagle in the forehead after Chavez-Eagle attempted to break up a fight on July 14, 2023. Nieves fled the scene, according to police and was arrested six days later.

Chavez-Eagle died at the scene.

“This was a sad and tragic case where an innocent victim was gunned down for absolutely no reason,” Mason said. “It’s heartbreaking to see a young life cut short over nothing. Gun violence — particularly amongst young people — continues to plague this community and now we have another young victim who is dead.”

Following a four-day long trial and a “rather short deliberation” the jury convicted Nieves. Senior Judge Theresa Cisneros sentenced the defendant to life in prison without the possibility of parole, according to a news release from Mason’s office.

Senior Lead Deputy District Attorney James Houtsma and Deputy District Attorney Hannah Mandel-Senft led the prosecution of this case.

“I appreciate the hard work of the Commerce City Police Department and my team at the DA’s Office in securing a conviction in this case,” Mason said. “My deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of the victim.”
