Broomfield woman sentenced after DUI crash kills 2 changing tire

Dusti Arsensdorf, 43, was sentenced to 24 years in prison following the 2023 crash

A 17th Judicial District judge sentenced a woman to 24 years in prison after she killed a father and daughter-in-law in a drunken-driving crash.

Judge Priscilla Loew sentenced 43-year-old Dusti Arsensdorf after she pleaded guilty in April to two counts of vehicular homicide, DUI and vehicular assault.

The pleas came following the double-fatal crash on Oct. 6, 2023, that killed Shuangyue Chen, 71, and his daughter-in-law, Yajing Liu, 35.

Liu’s husband and three-year-old son — Chen’s son and grandson — were also seriously injured in the crash, according to a news release from the 17th Judicial District Attorney’s Office.

The crash occurred on northbound I-25 between 144th Avenue and Highway 7 around 10 p.m. when Chen stopped to change a flat tire along the shoulder of the highway.

Arensdorf was driving “erratically” and weaving in and out of traffic on the interstate at speeds over 100 miles per hour, according to witnesses. She then struck Chen’s vehicle and Chen, who was still standing outside of it.

Liu was also thrown from the vehicle as it rolled into the field next to the interstate, according to the district attorney’s office. She was pronounced dead at the scene after first responders arrived.

Witnesses pulled Arensdorf from her vehicle and noted alcohol on her breath. She admitted to drinking “a couple of hard seltzers that night” and had a blood alcohol level of .343 at the hospital — over four times the legal limit, according to the release.

Arensdorf had three DUI convictions prior to this case. She will now serve 24 years in the Department of Corrections, followed by three years of parole.

“The defendant’s choices to drink and drive have completely destroyed an innocent family,” District Attorney Brian Mason said in the news release. “This was a horrific, unspeakable crime – and it was a horrific crime scene, that no one should have to see. A mother and a grandfather were taken from a small child as a result of the egregious actions of this defendant.
