Barnes & Noble asks court for updates on Tattered Cover’s bankruptcy

It comes days after reports that the national retailer was interested in Denver's iconic indie bookstore.

National bookseller Barnes & Noble wants updates on the bankruptcy case involving Denver’s independent bookstore Tattered Cover, according to court documents filed Monday afternoon.

The major book retailer and its acquisition firm filed a motion asking the federal bankruptcy court in Colorado to send all notices, motions and documents filed in the case to its lawyer.

The request is common in bankruptcy cases, as any creditor who has vested interest in the case can file a motion. But the recent filing comes days after the Denver Gazette confirmed Barnes & Noble is bidding to buy Tattered Cover, according to sources familiar with the proceedings.

If Barnes and Noble buys Tattered Cover, it would end Denver bookstore’s legacy of being independently-owned.

It’s still unknown if Barnes & Noble and Tattered Cover reached a deal.

Barnes & Noble and Tattered Cover did not immediately respond for comment.

Tattered Cover filed for bankruptcy last year, citing mounting debt from navigating the pandemic’s evolving marketplace and increased competition from online sellers. The bankruptcy also follows the exit of Tattered Cover’s former CEO, Kwame Spearman, who shifted focus toward his political career.

Bended Page LLC, the parent company of Tattered Cover, has been looking for a buyer since March to help it get out of bankruptcy.

The company was supposed to have an auction last week, but canceled it to continue discussions with interested parties.
