Lakewood police hand out free anti-car-theft tools
While state crime statistics indicate Colorado is seeing a decline in the number of vehicles stolen, the Lakewood Police Department wants to see that number go down even further.
Bought with grant money from the Colorado Auto Theft Prevention Authority, Lakewood offered new tools for free to help owners prevent their cars from being stolen and, if that happens, to recover their property faster.
The tools, as listed on the Lakewood Police Department’s Auto Theft Prevention webpage, included a small GPS tracking device, such as an Apple Air Tag or a Tile Tracker, a club to place over the steering wheel, and a decal to on the vehicle window to deter potential thieves.
The department and the Rocky Mountain Insurance Information Association (RMIIA) have noted that the 10 most commonly stolen vehicles in the metro area include the following:
Ford F-150
Hyundai Elantra
Chevrolet Silverado
Ford F-250
Hyundai Sonata
Kia Sportage
Ford F-350
Kia Soul
GMC Sierra
Kia Optima
In order to be eligible for this program, a car owner must schedule an appointment, and either live or work within Lakewood city limits.
Only one vehicle may be scheduled per appointment and only two per household. Commercial or company vehicles are not eligible.
To schedule an appointment online, the police urged residents to visit lakewood.org.
