Denver City Council considers $10M for affordable housing, homelessness response
Affordable housing and money for the Johnston administration’s homelessness initiative take center stage in the Denver City Council’s meeting on Monday.
The governing body will consider roughly $5 million in spending to assist financing and construction of 62 affordable housing units in the Five Points neighborhood.
Located between 2907 and 2915 Welton Street, the city is supporting the development of the properties through a pair of resolutions, which, all told, will approve a funding deal worth $1.6 million and a loan agreement of $3.4 million to assist with acquisition, financing and construction.
The land, which used to be owned by the Regional Transportation District, has a covenant requiring that any future developments have “permanent affordability,” according to city documents. The new development’s 62 units will range from one to three bedrooms and be restricted to those who make 80% of the area median income.
Denver Mayor Mike Johnston, whose administration has been funding initiatives aimed at increasing the affordable housing stock, wants to build and preserve 3,000 units.
Since Johnston’s inauguration in July, the city has helped create 534 units across 12 projects, seven of which have utilized taxpayer funding, according to Denver’s affordable housing dashboard.
The council will also consider spending $5 million to support the ongoing response to homelessness through a contract with Housing Connector.
The proposed contract will provide money for housing navigation and the distribution of time-limited, move-in financial assistance, and rental subsidies for 250 households moving from encampments to permanent housing, according to city documents.
