Denver weather: Record heat potential late week after a sunny Monday
Sean Pavone
Get ready for seasonal weather conditions Monday around the Mile High City, because by week’s end, today’s high will feel cold compared to what is coming.
Denver residents can expect sunny skies Monday with a high near 83, according to the National Weather Service in Boulder. Calm winds becoming east 5 to 9 mph in the afternoon are expected.
“A few showers or thunderstorms are possible in the mountains around Park County this afternoon and early evening,” the NWS said. “Brief heavy rain, small hail, and wind gusts to 35 mph are possible with any storm that develops.”
Tonight will be mostly clear with a low around 58, and east winds to blow between 6 to 8 mph, becoming south southwest after midnight.
Gradual warming each day the rest of the week is forecast, ramping up to triple digit highs by week’s end.
According to the NWS, the record high for July 12 is 101 degrees (1954 and 1971) and Denver might tie or eclipse that record, with a forecast high of 100.
The heat carries over into the weekend as well, with highs forecast to remain in the triple digits Saturday (100 in 2003) and Sunday (100 in 1878).
As reported by Meteorologist Chris Spears from Denver Gazette news partner 9News, since 1872 there have only been 15 instances of the city’s official weather station hitting 100 degrees on consecutive days. Most of those happened during the month of July, and most have been since the year 2000.
