Avett Brothers honor fan who died at Red Rocks concert

One person died at the Avett Brothers’ July 5 concert at Red Rocks, officials from the city of Denver and Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office confirmed Wednesday.

“Preliminarily, this appears to be nothing more than a very sad, unforeseen medical event,” said Jacki Kelly, public affairs director for the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.

On Sunday, the third consecutive Avett Brothers concert at Red Rocks, Scott Avett took a moment to honor the victim, whom he said was a man named “Rusty.”

“Friday night, we lost somebody in the parking lot,” Avett said. “What we understand is they fell ill and they didn’t make it. So, we consider that losing one of our own. That man’s name was Rusty, and we want to send Rusty love, his family love, and we want to dedicate this show and this song to Rusty.”

Kelly said the man was standing in line for the restroom at the bathrooms after in the upper north parking lot when he collapsed. Concertgoers tried to take care of him, and performed CPR, she said. He later died at an area hospital.

The identity of the man has been revealed by his family on social media, but not yet confirmed by authorities. The Jefferson County Coroner did not respond to an inquiry about an autopsy or identification by press time.

The Avett Brothers’ tribute on Sunday was a poignant moment that showed just how close the band’s relationship is with its fan base.

“I am going to say this as clear and as straight as I can,” Scott Avett told the 9,500 gathered. “When we talk to you guys and say we love you and thank you for coming out, we are not just talking to the blur of the crowd. We are talking to each one of you.”

The band — which includes Scott’s brother, Seth, sister, Bonnie Avett Rini and joined Friday by their father, Jim — then dedicated a song called “Through My Prayers” to the victim. It includes the lyrics: “If you have love in your heart, let it show while you can.”

Later, the Avett Brothers posted on the band’s social media accounts:

“Night 3 of The Avett Brothers’ annual run at Red Rocks was a poignant reminder of the fragility of life as we remembered a fan who passed away after Friday night’s show. May his memory inspire us to cherish life and the moments we share with loved ones. We wish love and peace to Rusty’s family and all those who are processing the grief of losing someone close to them.”

“Through My Prayers”

Hard to believe I won’t see you again

We were just fighting when winter began

The coldness of our words competing with the wind from the north

Still they make me shiver but in a very different way

The pages of the calendar kept turning away

I have some better words now, but it’s too late to say them to you

My dream of all dreams and my hope of all hopes

Is only to tell you and make sure you know

How much I love you and how much I always did

And yes I know you loved me I could see it in your eyes

And it was in your struggle and it was in your mind

And it was in the smile you gave me when I was a kid

Feels like no one understands

And now my only chance

To talk to you is through my prayers

I only wanted to tell ya I care

Every night after and every day since

I find myself crying when the memory hits

Sometimes it knocks me down, sometimes I can just put it away

Down in my mind where I don’t care to go

The pain of a lesson is letting me know

If you have love in your heart let it show while you can

Yes now I understand

But now my only chance

To talk to you is through my prayers

I only wanted to tell ya I care

I only wanted to tell ya I care
