Broncos’ Quinn Meinerz agrees to four-year, $80 million extension
Quinn Meinerz was a Pro Bowl snub in 2024, but in 2025 he will become one of the NFL’s highest-paid guards.
A source told The Denver Gazette on Tuesday night that the Broncos stalwart next Monday will sign a four-year, $80 million contract extension. His new money average of $20 million per season will tie him for being the league’s third-highest paid guard.
Meinerz, who had one year left on his rookie contract paying him a 2024 base salary of $3.366 million, will get $45 million on his new deal guaranteed, including $24 million to be paid by March 31, 2025. He will get a signing bonus of $21.775 million on the contract that locks him up through the 2028 season.
When it comes to being the NFL’s highest-paid guard, Meinerz, entering his fourth season, will be just behind Philadelphia’s Landon Dickerson ($21 million average) and Atlanta’s Chris Lindstrom ($20.5 million). He will be tied at $20 million with Carolina’s Robert Hunt and Indianapolis’ Quenton Nelson.
Meinerz has made an incredible rise since he was playing in Division III for Wisconsin-Whitewater and his senior season of 2020 was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic. He worked his way into shape on an unnamed island deep in the Canadian wilderness and then was impressive at the Senior Bowl, resulting in being selected by Denver in the third round of the 2021 draft.
Meinerz was a part-time starter as a rookie before moving into the lineup at right guard in 2022. He took a big leap in 2023, when he was ranked by Pro Football Focus as the NFL’s second-best guard. However, he was not selected for the Pro Bowl Games and didn’t earn All-Pro honors.
It had been expected since Meinerz became a dominant force last season that he would end up signing a big contract extension. Speaking to The Denver Gazette last December, Meinerz didn’t want to talk much about his contract situation.
“That’s why I’ve got an agent,’’ Meinerz, represented by Ron Slavin, said then. “I don’t have to worry about that. That’s why I pay an agent. At the end of the day, play will speak for itself. I’ve never played this game for money. I play this game (because) I love this game.”
Broncos veterans report Tuesday for training camp. However, the source said Meinerz, a Wisconsin native, will return to Denver one day before that to sign his contract.
