Fire reported 10 miles northwest of Monument

Metz fire

A fire, reported at under an acre in size, has been spotted in the hills north and west of Monument. The U.S. Forest Service announced the fire, named the Metz fire, on social media Tuesday afternoon.

The fire was initially reported at just a tenth of an acre and was caused by lightning, according to the Pike & San Isabel National Forests website.

Forest Service said a small hand crew is on the scene. Additionally, two helicopters were called in to drop water on the fire to limit spread, which have been successful.

The fire is in a remote wooded portion of the Pike National Forest in Douglas County west of Larkspur. The Forest Service says it was first reported around 4 p.m. Tuesday. There is no current containment estimate on the blaze. No structures are currently threatened, and no evacuation warnings have been issued as of 7 p.m. Tuesday.
