Newcastle University, a prestigious Russell Group founding member, has cemented its position as a Top 30 institution for job prospects after graduation.

Earning top rankings in Graduate Outcomes by The Sunday Times, The Guardian, and The Complete University Guide, Newcastle graduates are in high demand globally, as votes come in from not just the United Kingdom, but from employers worldwide.

Employer satisfaction, a key indicator of graduate outcomes, is assessed by employers worldwide, from China to the United States. In 2023, QS awarded 5 stars to the university for student employability. We are still awaiting the university’s performance results for this year.

Currently, the university student body includes 29,000 students from over 145 countries. United States students routinely flock to Newcastle for higher education, with at least 150 American students on campus.

“I had a friend who was born in the region, who suggested Newcastle when I indicated a desire to study overseas. Upon further investigation, I learned of Newcastle’s academic reputation as a superior place of learning.

The course work you’ll be studying are things that will help you find a career and help you find success. You will find everything you need to thrive in Newcastle, in both the University and surrounding community.”

– Mary, a full-time student at Newcastle University from the United States

While some Newcastle graduates join the world’s top companies, others pave their own path

According to the latest survey, almost 95% of Newcastle graduates entered employment or further study within 15 months of graduation. Many also go on to start their own businesses.

Take Dr. Andrew Jenkins, for example, a Newcastle University graduate who founded Kinewell Energy, supported by the University’s START-UP team. Just a decade since its founding, Kinewell Energy is already a world leader in offshore wind solutions, driving innovation in wind farms through cable optimization. Recently, Jenkins’ venture won the prestigious Energy Innovation of the Year award at VentureFest North East in recognition of its innovative technology for offshore wind cable layout design.

Newcastle University is renowned for breeding talent across various industries. Sally Grey, a creative writing graduate at Newcastle, authored her first novel at just 25 during the lockdown, drawing inspiration from Margaret Atwood’s dystopian novel “The Handmaid’s Tale”. Grey’s first novel “Fertile Ground” is available at major retailers. She is currently working on her second book.

Newcastle University isn’t just educating the next generation of innovators, it’s creating them. Just last year, spinouts (businesses created based on research & technology at the university) secured a record £40m from investors, with companies such as Advanced Electric Machines receiving significant funding to scale up production. The university currently has 37 spinouts, employing more than 300 people.

Microbritt, another university spinout company, secured a patent for its path-breaking micromilling method. This innovation paves the way for high-precision products made from delicate materials.

Research excellence is business as usual for the institution. Previously, the university ranked in the top 5 for Graduate Entrepreneurship, according to the 2018-19 HE-BCI Survey.

How graduate outcomes are calculated

If you’re not familiar with the higher education industry, it might seem like graduate outcomes are based on one indicator only: How many students landed a job after graduation?

However, this would be a gross oversimplification. In fact, multiple indicators such as graduate salaries, skill development, further study and employer satisfaction, play an important role in the rankings. Students from the 190-year-old institution go on to work with Formula 1, Microsoft, L’Oréal, Walt Disney, Bank of England, Warner Brothers, Great Ormond Street Hospital, and many more world-famous organizations.

The university also has significant ties with national and multinational industries, including technology innovator Dyson, PwC, GlaxoSmithKline, and their global principal partner, Siemens Research and Innovation Ecosystem (Siemens RIE).

Beyond that, prospective students and parents value the 9-12 month work placements that Newcastle University provides with almost all of its degree programs– a distinctive feature among universities in the United Kingdom.

Future-proofing careers with employment support

Newcastle University’s Career Services department offers support for up to three years after graduation, ensuring graduates benefit from specialist guidance, delivered by a dedicated team that works on alumni development.

The institution is ranked 129th overall in the QS World Rankings. Apart from being at the forefront of medical and technological research, programs such as architecture, linguistics, anatomy & physiology, dentistry and geography often feature in the Top 100 programs globally.
