When and where to get signature Colorado produce
Teresa Farney, Gazette file
It’s that time of year — when the best crops Colorado produces start showing up at farmers markets and store shelves. Here is a short list of when and where to get in on the deliciousness.
Pueblo chiles
Pueblo chiles are ripened and ready, according to Jasmine Maestas with Musso Farms in Pueblo.
“The chiles are much hotter than usual, but they’re ready,” Maestas said.
While it’s prime time for the chile harvest in the Arkansas River valley, local grocery stores such as King Soopers and Safeway said they will likely receive their shipment in mid-August.
Sweet corn
It’s finally sweet corn season in Colorado. According to Adam Smith with Smith Farms, located in Rocky Ford, their small sweet corn crop is ready for the public’s enjoyment and is being sold at their farm stand in Falcon.
While King Soopers says it has pre-packaged sweet corn in stock, the chain of stores have not received a shipment of farm-fresh sweet corn this season. Produce officials at Safeway say they’re expecting their shipment of sweet corn any day now.
Palisade peaches
The height of peach season in Palisade is upon us. Both Safeway and King Soopers said they have an abundant stock of peaches with more than enough to go around.
Rocky Ford cantaloupe
Following a sparse melon season in 2023 due to increased precipitation and hail that devastated cantaloupe crops in southern Colorado, a fruitful season for the sweet Rocky Ford cantaloupe is upon us.
Both Safeway and King Soopers told The Gazette that their stores are stocked with Rocky Ford melons now.
