Coloradans in the Games: Monday’s results and Tuesday’s lookahead for those with state ties in the Paris Olympics

Monday’s action
– Valarie Allman of Longmont defended her gold medal in the women’s discus throw.
The Silver Creek graduate posted a distance of 69.5 meters, blowing away the other medalists from China and Croatia by nearly two meters. All four of her non-foul throws were better than any throw from anyone else in the field.

– Broomfield’s Colin Duffy sits in 11th place following the boulder portion of the men’s boulder & lead climbing semifinals. His score of 33.8 tops the American competitors.
– Discovery Canyon and Colorado State graduate Lauren Gale, running for Canada, placed sixth in her women’s 400-meter heat with a time of 53.13 seconds.
– Boulder’s Elise Cranny placed 11th in the women’s 5,000 meters with a time of 14:48.06.
Five to watch
Looking ahead to Tuesday’s Olympic action with a focus on those with Colorado connections.
1. The U.S. women’s national soccer team, which includes Denver-area natives Lindsey Horan, Sophia Smith and Mallory Swanson, will face Germany at 10 a.m. in a semifinal.
In other major team sports, the U.S. women’s volleyball team (with Doherty grad Haleigh Washington and Jordyn Poulter of Aurora in key roles) will face Poland in a quarterfinal at 9 a.m. and the U.S. men’s basketball team, which includes Parker native Derrick White, will face Brazil in a 1:30 p.m. quarterfinal.
Nuggets stars Nikola Jokic (Serbia, vs. Australia at 6:30 a.m.) and Jamal Murray (Canada, vs. France at 10 a.m.) will also compete in the quarterfinals.
2. Olivia Cummins of Fort Collins will complete in qualifying in cycling (women’s team pursuit).
3. Brooke Raboutou of Boulder will compete in climbing (women’s boulder & lead).
4. Valerie Constien of Edwards will compete in the finals of the women’s 3000m steeplechase.
5. Kamal Bey, a Pine Creek graduate, will begin competition in men’s Greco-Roman wrestling (77 kg).
