Day 9 of Broncos training camp: Bo Nix first-team quarterback reps continue

Broncos Training Camp

ENGLEWOOD — A behind-the-scenes look at Broncos training camp practice Monday with observations and analysis from The Denver Gazette.

Play of the day

QB Zach Wilson threw a beautiful deep ball down the sideline in 7-on-7 for a long touchdown completion to wide receiver Troy Franklin with cornerback Damarri Mathis in coverage.

QB watch

Rookie Bo Nix continued his push to earn the starting role with reps on the first-team offense. He closed one team period with consecutive completions to Lil’Jordan Humphrey (while escaping pocket pressure) and Courtland Sutton (deep post). Jarrett Stidham led the second-team offense and found wide receiver David Sills for a touchdown pass up the sideline in 7-on-7. Wilson made several nice plays but appears out of the first-team QB rotation. Expect Stidham to be QB1 for Tuesday’s practice.

Stock rising

CB Pat Surtain. It’s no real surprise he’s locking down most wide receivers in one-on-one drills. But watching Surtain help teammates with an increased leadership role is notable.

Stock falling

S Caden Sterns. The Broncos plan to release the fourth-year safety unless they find a trade partner. Sterns struggled to stay healthy in Denver.

Attendance check

Right tackle Mike McGlinchey was absent Monday due to his wife recently giving birth, coach Sean Payton said.

Injury report

Cornerback Levi Wallace (hamstring) observed Monday from the sideline. Outside linebacker Nik Bonitto (back) returned to practice.

What’s next

Training camp resumes with practice at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Broncos Park.
