Aurora conducts survey to identify needs of older residents

Older Adults in Aurora

Aurora has launched a survey to gather more information about the needs of the city’s older residents.

The survey is part of a larger project called the Older Adults Needs Assessment, which aims to develop better support for older adults through city policies, programs and services, according to Griselda Romero, a community engagement coordinator for the city.

Aurora picked JSI Research & Training  to conduct the survey through a competitive bid. The survey will cost the city $206,953 — dollars that will come from the city’s general and recreation funds. JSI is providing other services besides the survey, such as public engagement through focus groups, a gaps and needs analysis, and recommendations based on the information gathered, Romero said.

JSI Research & Training is a nonprofit that works with government agencies and others on health care issues.

Officials hope the survey will point to areas for potential improvement in the city’s existing programs, as well as opportunities for new initiatives.

“Ultimately, the survey will help ensure that Aurora’s services and programs are well-aligned with the actual needs of its older residents, allowing for a more supportive and enriching environment for the older adult population,” Romero said.

The survey is open to all Aurora residents ages 60 and over. It is also open to parents, caregivers, and any individuals caring for older adults, according to a news release from the city.

The survey covers several issues, including financial need, housing, transportation, and community resources, such as financial planning, access to medical care and various city-provided services.

It asks participants to rate their mental and physical health and about their access to “affordable, quality mental health care.”

Finally, it asks about the greatest needs of older adults and encourages respondents to provide feedback about positive aspects of living and aging in the city.

The website and survey are available in Amharic, English, Korean, Mandarin, Spanish and Vietnamese. The survey is open until Sept. 1 and can be accessed at EngageAurora.org/OlderAdults. A paper version is also available at all Aurora recreation centers and Aurora Public Libraries.
