Coloradans in the Games: Tuesday’s results and Wednesday’s lookahead for those with state ties in the Paris Olympics

Tuesday’s news
– Sarah Hildebrandt swept through the first three rounds of the women’s freestyle wrestling to move to the gold medal match at 50 kg.
Hildebrandt, a Colorado Springs resident since 2015, outscored her opponents 22-4. The major challenge came in a 7-4 victory over China’s Feng Ziqi in the quarterfinals.
– Windsor’s Sophia Smith, a Fossil Ridge High graduate, scored the game-winning goal in extra time to push the U.S. women past Germany 1-0 in a soccer semifinal.
Highlands Ranch’s Mallory Swanson, a Mountain Vista grad, assisted on the goal in the 95th minute.
The U.S. will face Brazil for the gold medal Saturday.
– Denver Nuggets players had mixed results in the men’s basketball quarterfinals.
Nikola Jokic scored 21 points with 14 rebounds and eight assists in helping Serbia overcome a 12-point halftime deficit against Australia. Serbia will face the United States in the semifinals. The Americans beat Brazil 122-87.
Jamal Murray’s Canada team was sent home by host France with an 82-73 loss. Murray scored seven points with five rebounds in 24 minutes off the bench.
As for Team USA, there was a moment where Brazil might have thought it had a chance. It trailed the U.S. by only eight midway through the second quarter. The moment was short-lived. A 21-2 run turned things into their predictable blowout (122-87) and for the 20th time in 20 Olympic appearances, the U.S. will play for a medal. Devin Booker led a balanced attack with 18 points. Derrick White, who played at Legend High School in Parker, scored five points.
– The U.S. women’s volleyball team notched a 3-0 victory over Poland in a quarterfinal, setting up a semifinal matchup with Brazil on Thursday.
Colorado Springs native Haleigh Washington and Aurora’s Jordyn Poulter are key players on the U.S. squad.
– Boulder’s Brooke Raboutou ranks third in climbing (women’s boulder & lead) after the boulder competition Tuesday.
– Valerie Constien of Edwards placed 15th in the women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase.
– Pine Creek graduate Kamal Bey lost in the first round of men’s Greco-Roman wrestling.
Three to watch
Looking ahead to Wednesday’s Olympic action with a focus on those with Colorado connections.
1. Colorado Springs resident Sarah Hildebrandt will face India’s Vinesh Phogat in the women’s wrestling freestyle gold medal match (50 kg).
Hildebrandt, 30, took bronze in the event at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo.
2. Fort Collins’ Olivia Cummins, a cyclist and first-time Olympian, will compete in the women’s team pursuit.
3. Broomfield’s Colin Duffy will compete in the lead portion of the climbing – boulder & lead competition.
