Day 10 of Broncos training camp: Sean Payton says corrections needed after practice

Sean Payton

ENGLEWOOD — A behind-the-scenes look at Broncos training camp practice Tuesday with observations and analysis from The Denver Gazette.

Play of the day

Cornerback Tremon Smith closed out an 11-on-11 period with an interception. Quarterback Zach Wilson zipped a pass intended for running back Audric Estime. The football bounced off his hands and Smith collected the pick.

QB watch

The first-team quarterback rotation continued on schedule with Jarrett Stidham getting his turn. He connected with tight end Adam Trautman for a touchdown in 7-on-7. Rookie quarterback Bo Nix led the second-team offense, and he threw back-to-back touchdowns passes (Lucas Kroll and Tim Patrick) during 7-on-7. Wilson continued his work at QB3 with several nice throws.

Stock rising

WR Devaughn Vele. The seventh-round draft pick out of Utah continues to impress. He made a leaping grab at the pylon for a touchdown completion from Wilson during 11-on-11 play. Vele adds to an especially deep wide receivers room in training camp.

Stock falling

Sean Payton’s mood. The coach was not pleased overall with Tuesday practice. Payton said: “It wasn’t one of our better practices. We’ve got to turn it around (Wednesday) and get some better work done. … Mentally, I thought we hit a wall, a little bit. We’ll see the film.”

Attendance check

Right tackle Mike McGlinchey returned after missing Monday’s practice (birth of his child).

Injury report

A handful of players attended practice but worked out separately on the side field: OLB Nik Bonitto (back), S Brandon Jones (hamstring), LB Drew Sanders (Achilles), LB Justin Strnad (groin) S Delarrin Turner-Yell (ACL) and CB Levi Wallace (hamstring).

What’s next

Training camp resumes with practice at 10 a.m. on Wednesday at Broncos Park.
