Zach Wilson upbeat despite trailing in Broncos quarterback derby: ‘I’ve got no control over that’
ENGLEWOOD — It’s been almost two weeks since Zach Wilson led the first-team Broncos offense at training camp.
Coach Sean Payton has yet to name a starting quarterback ahead of the preseason opener Sunday at the Colts. Yet a large sample of practice repetitions indicate Wilson — a No. 2 overall draft pick (‘21, Jets) — is falling out of contention to Bo Nix and Jarrett Stidham.
Wilson addressed the media Wednesday following the 11th training camp practice with fans at Broncos Park.
“When you really sit down and think about it, I’ve got no control over that,” Wilson said when asked about his primarily third-team reps. “I think the worst you can do is let it affect you. The best you can do is just say: ‘OK, I’m going to take what I’ve got. Do out there and do the best I can. Put my best foot forward.’ Try my best. Try to help this team do the best it can getting down the field and complete some passes.
“I think that’s all I’ve got to worry about.”
Payton described Wilson’s strengths when asked after a recent training camp practice.
“I see a guy who is pretty savvy with his snaps,” Payton said. “You never feel a panic, so there’s a calmness to him. He made a few really good throws today and I would say a little bit of his patience play to play.”
Wilson enters the next chapter of his NFL journey after three disappointing seasons with the Jets. His mindset for training camp has changed, Wilson said, with a personal emphasis on “being grateful” and “absolute love” for the game.” Wilson added that Davis Webb “does a phenomenal job” as quarterbacks coach.
The first preseason game will be Wilson’s next chance to climb the depth chart.
What does he want to show the coaching staff?
“Just consistency. Poise. Like I know what I’m doing,” Wilson said. “Get the ball out of my hands and let the playmakers that we have make some plays.”
