New species of bug known for carrying ‘Yellow Fever’ found in Colorado

A new potentially dangerous species of mosquito that’s typically found in tropical and subtropical areas was recently trapped in the Orchard Mesa area near western Colorado’s Grand Junction.

While the mosquito species, the Aedas aegypti, is known for spreading nasty illnesses like dengue fever, chikungunya, Zika fever, Mayaro, and yellow fever viruses – to the point where the species is commonly referred to as the ‘yellow fever mosquito’ – local health officials report that no diseases have been detected related to the presence of the species thus far.

With more than 100 eggs of the species found in the Mesa County area along with at least five adults, the Grand River Mosquito Control District is “actively treating and fogging” the area in response. That said, the Aedas aegypti’s ability to lay eggs in extremely small amounts of water makes the species difficult to control.

It’s important to note that this species of mosquito is known for being active during the day, with most other species more active during dawn, dusk, and night. Typically, the Aedes aegypti will only fly about 50 feet from its hatching spot throughout its lifetime, recognizable by black and white markings on its legs.

Reporting from Western Slope Now indicates that officials believe the mosquito species may have ‘hitched a ride’ to the area from somewhere like Moab where a population of the species has been known to exist.

Officials have instructed those in the area to use mosquito repellent while outside, as well as to wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants. It’s also important to drain anything that might be capable of holding water at least twice a week.

“No cases of the diseases that can be associated with this species of mosquito have been reported in Mesa County. If there is ever a concern about cases, we will notify the community,” said Kathleen Satterfield, Epidemiologist at Mesa County Public Health.
