A section of a boulder blocking Barr Trail is set to be removed by the Pikes Peak Ranger District this week, resulting in a two-day closure of the Manitou Incline, according to a news release Monday.
The release states that the partial removal of the boulder, which slid onto Barr Trail earlier this year, is slated to take place Tuesday and Wednesday.
According to previous Gazette reporting, the boulder is about 1.5 miles up from the trailhead in Manitou Springs. The hiking area is frequently used by those looping back to the parking lot after completing the Manitou Incline or those hiking Pikes Peak.
The release stated that the boulder became a “safety hazard for visitors on the trail,” and needed at least partial removal.
“Barr Trail is a very busy trail, and we want to make sure this trail and all Forest Service trails are safe and maintained for generations to come,” said Carl Bauer, with the Pikes Peak Ranger District, in the release. “Removing a section of this boulder will make the route more accessible for the public and continue to be a great option for a return hike down the incline or a daytrip up Pikes Peak.”
To allow for the boulder portion to be removed, the Manitou Incline will be closed Tuesday and Wednesday, according to the release.
