Two Englewood juveniles face potential attempted first-degree murder charges after allegedly shooting an AK-47 at a police officer.
The incident began around 11 p.m. on Sunday when Englewood police officers attempted to stop a red Jeep Grand Cherokee for a defective vehicle violation in the area of West Dartmouth Avenue and South Shoshone Street, according to a news release from the Englewood Police Department.
The driver refused to stop after the officer put on their emergency lights, police said. The passenger of the Jeep then began allegedly firing “over a dozen” shots from a “high-powered weapon” out of the passenger side window.
Multiple struck the front and windshield of the police vehicle, but missed the officer driving. The patrol vehicle was disabled from the damage, police said.
Officers pursued the vehicle through both an industrial area and a neighborhood before the Jeep crashed. Two suspects then fled the vehicle, leading to a multi-agency search.
The search continued on for a “lengthy” amount of time, police said. Eventually, despite the help of a tactical team and K-9 unit, the search was cancelled.
Initial investigations at the suspect vehicle found an AK-47 and numerous shell casings. Investigators were eventually able to tie the incident to two juvenile suspects.
One suspect was arrested on Monday and the other on Tuesday. Both were arrested on suspicion of attempted first-degree murder of a public official.
The identity of the suspects will not be released at this time due to being juveniles. Official charges will come from the 18th Judicial District Attorney’s Office at a later date.
“These type of incidents reminds us of the inherent dangers that Law Enforcement faces daily and we are eternally grateful that we can so no officers or community members were injured during this incident,” the department said in the release.
