Those with wood-burning stoves and fireplaces, take heed. Jeffco Open Space is now selling permits for its popular annual firewood sale at White Ranch Park on Sept. 14 and 15.

Permits are $30 each, with a strict limit of two per customer.

For those filling a truck or trailer, an additional $30 fee applies.

Permits are limited and “vary by the size of the available log deck and the capacity for access,” said Mary Ann Bonnell, JCOS Director of Visitor Services and Natural Resources. “This year, we are planning to issue 48 permits.”

Each day of the firewood sale will have 24 (two-hour) slots.

On average, Open Space officials note that this year’s logs have been seasoned for approximately 1 to 1.5 years and are 20-40 feet long. Permittees must bring chainsaws to cut them into the desired lengths.

JCOS has hosted the annual firewood sale for more than 20 years.

Bonnell said site selection varies based on Jeffco’s Forest Health Plan and is a win-win for both the county and local residents.

“When we complete forest health projects in our parks, and we can logistically provide safe access to the log deck, we like to allow the community to utilize the thinned trees for firewood,” she said.

Those interested in purchasing a permit must first create an account on the JCOS website https://secure.rec1.com/CO/jefferson-county-open-space/catalog.
