Trail makes nature more accessible for visually-impaired people in Colorado Springs
A special segment of the Songbird Trail in the Bear Creek Nature Center trail system allows visually impaired people to better enjoy the natural landscape.
Opened in 2023, the visually impaired persons (VIP) trail is a flat and wide boardwalk that includes interpretive signs that provide details about flora and fauna found along the trail. A braided rope guides users to interactive signs. It has a tactile rope grip that prompts the use of the Pen Friend audio device, which reads the signs aloud to the user.
The VIP trail is open to the public during park hours, is free and does not require reservations. The Pen Friends accessibility tool is only available during Bear Creek Nature Center hours, which is open 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
