Woody Paige: With a final round crowd in contention, Best Man Wins at the BMW Championship

Prepare ye for The Charge of the Forthright Brigade!

The BMW Championship will be transformed into the Castle Rock Hill Climb, a Battle Royale, the Chase For A Place in the Race, a golfapolooza and the FedExtraordinary Finish.

At least 40 of the remaining 48 5/6ths of the field, will be playing for something special and spectacular Sunday. The pros will not plot prosaic.

It will be like an Alfred, Lord Tennyson long poem with long drives, long looks, long putts and too many long shots into ponds, cascading waterfalls, rocks, pines, gnarly fine-inch rough and buried lies in bunkers that are severely tough.

Someone will take away $3.6 million as the champ of the biggest payout in Colorado golf history — $20 million, which certainly isn’t chump change.

Some 28 of the players will advance to the FedEx finale next week in Atlanta. Two injury dropouts from the tournament already have qualified. Some 40 players will earn six figures.

Some guy named Keegan Bradley, who recently was named the next American Ryder Cup captain and, after he was erroneously not chosen for the last American defeat, was the 50th player – last – to become certified for the BMW tournament. He is first in Castle Pines following the third round at 12-under par and has elevated at elevation to fourth in the FedEx Cup standing projections now.

Adam Scott, who tied the course record with a 63 to take the lead through two rounds, slid 11 strikes to a 74 Saturday and is second at 11-under. Third at minus-10 is Sweet Swede Ludvig Aberg, who also had a 63 Friday and a 71 in the third round. He plays golf like a German fellow named Ludwig played piano. Tied with Aberg is another pro from Sweden – Alex Noren. One of them played at Texas Tech, the other at Oklahoma State. One is 42, the other the reverse age of 24. Somewhere Peter Forsberg is smiling.

How about a hometown hero as the Best Of BMW. Colorado’s own Wyndam Clark, who graduated from nearby Valor Christian, is seven-under and is one of three Coloradans who have been hanging out at Castle Pines this week to win a major 2023 U.S. Open. The other two cheering him are Hale Irwin and Craig Stadler.

But, how about this, even with “Win-dom’’ is Xander Schauffee. All the X-Man has done this year is win the British Open and the PGA Championship. With two rounds in the 60s he could throw a little 62 at Castle Pines.

How about a playoff in the PGA playoffs? Could happen at Castle Pines Sunday. Shootout at Sundown?

Some 17 players are within seven strokes of No. 1 with 18 holes remaining. Another seven are at minus-4 and have an outside chance outside Denver.

Meanwhile, between the golf ball-busting No. 10 and the birdie-bashing No. 17 a dozen other players aren’t planning to win at Castle Pines. But they are hoping to make it in the top 30 at East Lake Golf Club. Tommy Fleetwood and Brian Harman are projected at the moment to be in the last few to make the cut to 30, while Justin Thomas, Jason Day and Si Woo Kim are on the outside. A math wizard of ahs will be required to figure it out Sunday about noon.

Therein lies the rub: The 48 players Sunday must go all out and be all in.

Well, maybe except for Scottie Scheffler, the First One in golf in the world. He’s had a plain vanilla milkshake 71-72-74 total, with 34 pars, in three efforts and would have to shoot a universal 56 or thereabouts to pass the field. But he will still have a projected 6,614.75 points in the FedEx standings and be, not only No. 1 in the finals with a head start and as the favorite, but he would go over $30 million in tournament income in ’24. He’s only won six times.

The true champion the past week has been new Castle Pines and Colorado golf. The tournament has been sensational and the course stingy and always demanding because of the altitude and attitude. Jack Nicklaus returned to his innovative and renovated architectural gemstone by the Rockies. The PGA Tour would like to be back here in the BMW rotation in four years, but should be back here every year.

BMW means Best Man Wins Sunday.
