Colorado charity event highlights cars, planes and motorcycles, including a $1.3 million Bugatti coupe

Most people involved in the automotive community have heard of “cars and coffee.”

But what about cars, motorcycles and airplanes, paired with some of the best food and beverage options in the Mile High City?

Combine it all with millions of dollars raised in support of childhood cancer research and there’s one of Colorado’s most unique charitable events — the Morgan Adams Concours d’Elegance.

The Morgan Adams Foundation was established in memory of Morgan Adams, a young girl who lost her battle with a glioblastoma multiforme brain tumor at the age of five in December of 1997.

Founded by her parents, Steven Adams and Joan Slaughter, the organization funds innovative pediatric cancer research, aiming to improve treatment effectiveness, survival rates and quality of life for children and young adults facing cancer.

The foundation hosts several fundraising events throughout the year, like the Concours, dubbed an “aircraft and automobile extravaganza” and artma, an annual art auction with the next edition coming up next February.

“There is nothing like it,” Slaughter said of the event in an interview with Denver Gazette news partner 9News. “We run the gamut of the production history of cars, planes and motorcycles. You’ll see things you’ll never see on the street. We run the whole spectrum.”

This year’s event, hosted at Centennial Airport, marked the 21st edition of the Morgan Adams Concours d’Elegance. It featured one of the most robust lineups to date.

Special exhibits included displays for the anniversaries of classic marques Packard and MG – Packard celebrating its 125th anniversary and MG celebrating 75 years of history, respectively.

The featured car from this year’s event was a 1936 Bugatti Type 57 Atalante Sunroof Coupe with chassis no. 57432. The vehicle is one of three surviving vehicles of its kind for that model year out of eight manufactured. In October of 1936, it sold for approximately $113,000 in today’s U.S. dollars, given conversion from French francs to dollars and accounting for inflation.

The car’s storied history includes a racing pedigree with entries in the Rallye des Alpes, Monte Carlo and Rome-Liege-Rome rallies. In 1963, the car fled with its owner from the then-Belgian Congo amidst a civil war. Earlier this year, it sold in Scottsdale for $1.38 million at a Bonhams auction.

While there was a robust collection of classics from every decade, there was also a touch of modern with unmistakable Lamborghinis, modern Ferraris, McLarens and even the most modern of them all – a Tesla Cybertruck.

Additionally, the event included a diverse selection of food and drink vendors, including Yahya’s, Somebody People, Uncorked Kitchen with a French-inspired pairing, 505 Southwest, Palenque Cocina Y Agaveria, Ocean Prime–DTC, Nolia, Italco, Silver Spoons, BlueBell Ice Cream, Chocolove/Vinnie Fera, Ciao Cacao, Denver Pops, and Stranahan’s.

It takes place every year in August. The foundation also accepts donations year-round on its website.
