Broncos OT Mike McGlinchey on success for rookie QB Bo Nix: ‘It’s just staying the course’
Broncos co-owner Greg Penner called Bo Nix after Nix was named the starting quarterback
ENGLEWOOD — Bo Nix will inevitably face challenges in his rookie season quarterbacking the Broncos.
How will the team respond?
Starting right tackle Mike McGlinchey summed it up following a practice last week at Broncos Park.
“It’s just staying the course,” McGlinchey said. “It’s not overreacting or underreacting to anything, no matter what the results are as they come and as they go.”
The Broncos have lacked quarterback consistency since 2016, after Peyton Manning retired, with 14 starting quarterbacks, including Nix. The Walton-Penner ownership group has signaled a more patient approach. CEO and co-owner Greg Penner said he called Nix after Nix was named the starting quarterback by coach Sean Payton in preseason.
“All rookies are going to go through some ups and downs in their first season,” Penner said. “I told him: ‘We’re going to support you.’”
Nix, 24, will start his first NFL regular season game on Sunday at the Seattle Seahawks.
“We understand that there’s a lot of pressure on his shoulders and everybody wants him to succeed greatly here. It doesn’t mean that he has to press and do something special every single day,” McGlinchey said. “He just has to do his job. I think we’ve been very fortunate that our team is built very well, especially on the offensive side of the ball. We have a lot of veterans that can help him. … I think it’s just taking things as they come. No overreactions and no dramatic changes of the course.
“Things like that just cause more problems.”
McGlinchey, 30, enters his seventh NFL season with a more nuanced understanding of NFL team success. He reached the Super Bowl as a rookie with the 49ers before two losses in the NFC championship game. McGlinchey described that consistency as “incredibly rare.” How does it happen?
“It takes every ounce of effort, work and detail to be able to make a run like that and certainly a little bit of luck,” McGlinchey said. “You need to be able to stay healthy. You need to be able to have your full team ready to go, and it’s something we’re going to really work hard at. I think we’re in a great position. I feel a changing in the tides coming along, and hopefully we can make a run out of this year.”
That’s big talk for small expectations, at least from a sports betting perspective. The over/under on Broncos wins this season is 5.5, according to BetMGM. That reflects youth at several key positions, including quarterback. But McGlinchey thinks that will play to Nix and the Broncos’ advantage in 2024.
“I think it just allows you to play free,” McGlinchey said. “There are a lot of guys in this building with a lot of talent who haven’t necessarily gotten a shot to prove that to the rest of the world yet. It’s awesome to have them overlook us. Because it’s going to be a lot of fun when we prove them wrong.”
