Douglas County deputy injured in high-speed chase after burglary
One suspect in custody, but two who fled on foot still at large.
A Douglas County Sheriff’s Department deputy has been released from the hospital and one Aurora man is in custody after he rammed the officer’s vehicle during an alleged early morning burglary that became a high-speed chase.
Brenton Zeiler, 29, of Aurora, was one of three people who Douglas County Sheriff Darren Weekly said were in the midst of a theft at a salvage yard at Highway 85 and Blakeland Drive when deputies began to set up a perimeter in an effort to control the active situation. That’s when, Weekly told reporters, Zeiler struck a sheriff’s vehicle on the front passenger side and sped off headed north on Highway 85, leaving two other suspects behind.
Those two men are still on the loose and sheriffs kept the perimeter around the salvage yard in case they were hiding nearby, Weekly said.
“We’re making sure they still aren’t hunkered down here,” he said. “They probably fled on foot and are no longer in the area.”
The suspect turned east from Highway 85 to Belleview Avenue headed where he lost his trailer and began shooting at ensuing deputies with a 9mm handgun, Weekly. The chase ended near Cherry Creek High School in Greenwood Village at Village Green Park where the truck hit a tree following a “short standoff.” That’s where Weekly said that Zeiler threw his firearm over a fence and was apprehended.
Village Green Park is located at 9501 E Union Ave.
Zeiler was taken to a hospital and released. He is currently under suspicion of criminal attempt at first degree murder.
