Suspect arrested in fatal Denver road rage shooting

Fernando Alvarez-Chacon, 35, was shot and killed on Aug. 29

Denver police arrested a suspect in connection to a fatal shooting thought to be a road-rage incident.

Police arrested 21-year-old Chyon Kendrick on Wednesday on suspicion of first-degree murder after the shooting that occurred near the intersection of West Byers Place and South Kalamath Street around 2 p.m. Aug. 29, according to a press release from the Denver Police Department.

Officers stopped in the area to check on a black pickup truck that was stopped in the grass overlooking Interstate 25. Officers found 35-year-old Fernando Alvarez-Chacon suffering from a gunshot wound and transported him to a nearby hospital.

Alvarez-Chacon was pronounced deceased at the hospital and was later identified by the Denver Office of the Medical Examiner on Wednesday.

Investigators believe the shooting occurred after a road-rage incident, according to the press release. The victim was initially shot while driving on South Santa Fe Drive, then coming to a stop near South Kalamath Street and West Byers Place, police said.

Investigators were then able to identify Kendrick as a suspect through witness accounts and video evidence.

Official charges will be filed by the Denver District Attorney’s Office following investigations.
