Broncos vs. Seahawks grades: Denver struggles in season-opening loss
The Broncos opened the season with a 26-20 loss Sunday against the Seattle Seahawks.
Here are our grades:
Offense
Quarterback Bo Nix looked like a rookie starting his first game on the road with two interceptions and several near picks. He did rush for a touchdown late. The offense never really found momentum even with good field position in the first half. It went 0-for-3 in the red zone. A lack of playmakers on offense also showed as big plays were not there for Denver.
Grade: D
Defense
The unit was dominant in the first half but faltered in the second half as it spent a lot of time on the field. Seattle’s adjustment at halftime to emphasize the run punished Denver and slowed down the pass rush that was so good early in the game. The Broncos had a chance to get the ball back one more time but an offsides call on Baron Browning negated it.
Grade: B
Special teams
Kicker Wil Lutz was a perfect 3-for-3 on field goals. Riley Dixon had one of his punts downed at the 1-yard line which led to one of the safeties. Marvin Mims Jr. had some chances in the return game but didn’t make much happen.
Grade: A
Coaching
Sean Payton really didn’t take the training wheels off for Nix. Most throws were behind the sticks and they never really pushed it down the field. Denver had eight penalties, including the bad offsides at the end of the game.
Grade: C
